The Impact of Your Mindset on Fitness and Wellbeing
As a women’s personal trainer, I’ve seen firsthand how mindset can make or break a fitness journey. The truth is, our minds can either propel us forward or hold us back—and often, we don’t even realise it. Understanding the impact your mindset has on your physical and mental health is a crucial step toward overcoming obstacles and achieving your fitness goals.
How Your Mindset Affects Your Fitness
Our brains are wired to protect us. This primitive instinct helps us stay safe, but it can also create barriers to progress, especially when it comes to fitness. Here are a few key ways your mindset can influence your workout routine:
1. Stress Response and Self-Doubt
- The brain’s primary function is to keep us safe, which means it often sees anything unfamiliar or uncomfortable as a potential threat. New exercises, unfamiliar environments, or challenging movements can trigger a stress response, causing your mind to push you to avoid them. That little voice in your head starts telling you, “This is too hard” or “I can’t do this.” In this way, your mindset can prevent you from moving forward, both mentally and physically.
2. Mental Fatigue Affects Physical Performance
- If your mind is constantly stressed or drained, it’s harder to stay motivated to exercise. Mental exhaustion leads to physical fatigue, making workouts feel much harder than they are. When you’re mentally drained, your body feels it too, and your perceived level of exertion increases. As a result, it becomes more challenging to get yourself to exercise, let alone enjoy it.
3. Negative Mindset and Problem-Solving
- A negative mindset often focuses on obstacles and problems, making it harder to see solutions. When you’re primed to focus on the negatives, every challenge becomes a roadblock. On the flip side, a positive mindset helps you find solutions and workarounds, even when faced with setbacks. The difference between a “I can’t” and “I can” mindset can have a massive impact on your success.
4. Overcoming Multiple Obstacles
- If you experience a combination of more than one of the above mindset challenges, getting yourself to exercise can feel like a huge hurdle to overcome. A combination of these challenges can make your willpower to get moving, even harder to tap into.
Recognising and Shifting Your Mindset
In our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook the impact of mindset on our fitness journey. Often, we don’t even realise that our thoughts and feelings are standing in the way of progress. The good news is, you can shift your mindset and cultivate a healthier, more positive approach to fitness.
Here’s how to get started:
-
Recognise Your Brain’s Primitive Nature
- Accept that your brain is designed to keep you alive, not necessarily to push you outside your comfort zone. It doesn’t realise that a little discomfort (like trying a new exercise or environment) isn’t life-threatening. When you hear that negative self-talk creeping in, remind yourself that you’re not in any real danger and that you will get through it. To make it a little easier to step outside your comfort zone, look for ways to reduce the level of discomfort by seeking out fitness environments and coaching that feel less intimidating and more supportive.
-
Declutter Your Mind
- Make time to clear your mind regularly. Mental rest is just as important as physical rest. Try meditation to quiet your mind and allow it to recharge. Whether it’s deep breathing, mindfulness, or a guided session, find what works for you and make it part of your routine.
-
Practice Gratitude and Positivity
- Start your day by asking yourself for 3 things you’re thankful for. By consistently focusing on gratitude, you train your brain to look for the positive, even in difficult situations. Over time, this habit will shift your mindset to one that’s more solution-oriented, empowering you to push through challenges with a positive attitude.
Cultivating a Positive Mindset for Long-Term Fitness Success
The key to achieving your fitness goals lies in more than just physical effort—it’s about creating a mindset that supports you. By recognising the impact of your thoughts, accepting that setbacks happen, and actively working to shift your mindset, you can unlock your full potential. Whether you’re new to exercise or you’ve been working out for years, a positive, growth-oriented mindset is essential for success.
